We have made it over another huge hurdle! Sage's surgery was a success yesterday. She just did so remarkably well, and I know it was in huge part to our Great God who has been watching over her and all the prayers you all have been sending His way. Thank you!! My sister, Sandy, came with Bill and I to the hospital and my mom stayed at home with the other kids. It was great to have Sandy there not just for moral support but also because she is an RN and gets all the medical lingo. Sage was just a little charmer. She didn't fuss about getting vitals taken or even taking the "happy" medicine, she just sucked it down. Sage and I were hanging out on the bed and about ten minutes after she took the medicine she began to sink into the bed, then she just looked up at me and mumbled, "Wuv you" with a big drunken grin on her face. Sandy and I just busted up laughing, which made Sage smile bigger and look even more punchy. It was pretty funny. By the time the nurse carried her away she was off in la-la land and didn't cry a bit.
The surgery took about an hour and a half. We had been told it would take an hour, so I was starting to get a bit nervous as time went on. But the doctor finally came out and said everything went great. He took our her entire right eye. She has a new "orb" that is attached to the muscles behind the eye so that it will move like the other one. There is then a "conformer" on top of that which looked to me like an eye shaped contact. It is sort of a place holder until she gets the prosthetic eye created and put in. The conformer is also the piece that could fall out, not the orb itself. Phew! I can now get rid of the visions of her eye ball rolling down the steps and me chasing it like a marble! Sage is wearing a patch over her eye until tomorrow, so we don't know what it looks like yet.
Sage woke up well after the surgery, but she was hot (she'd been under a warming blanket during the surgery so her temp had risen) and thirsty. The nurse offered her a popsicle but Sage just said "drink" and signed it too. The nurse didn't want her to drink too much or too quickly because of the anesthesia, but she couldn't resist Sage's sad little cry and she ended up giving her THREE cups of juice! The nurse was quite taken by Sage, it was sweet. After that Sage fell asleep in my arms. Sage was discharged and basically slept the whole way home and again once we got home. She didn't eat much that evening, but her spirits were good and she was back to playing and chatting. It's hard to believe all she had for pain meds all day was regular tylenol. I would have beggin' for the codeine, I'm sure! The other huge blessing was that Sage slept the entire night through! Praise God!

At that point we will figure out which occularist we will take her to to fit her for her prosthetic eye. We hope she'll have that in in about 6 weeks. I will post more pictures after the great reveal tomorrow.

By the way....yesterday marked the 4 month anniversary of when Sage, then known as Shun Yunyi, was placed in our arms screaming and crying. How amazing is it that 4 months later she finds comfort and peace in those same arms?
